Fernanda is a Brazilian living in São Paulo, Adriana is a Mexican-Brazilian living in Los Angeles. In a period of isolation, far away from each other, they both reconnect through video-letters, inspired by the poetic gaze of women experimental filmmakers like Marie Menken, Joyce Wieland, Gunvor Nelson and Yvonne Rainer.

Chica Barbosa est une cinéaste mexicaine-brésilienne basée à Los Angeles, États-Unis. Son travail porte sur le cinéma de non-fiction, les récits expérimentaux et hybrides et aborde des thèmes tel que l’immigration, la colonisation, le déplacement, le droits LFBTQ+, l’identité et la foi comme acte de résistance. Elle a récemment déménagé de São Paulo, au Brésil, où elle faisait partie du collectif de cinéma “Cinefusão” et où elle a lancé sa propre société de production “”En Caliente Films” en 2014. Elle a réalisé “Ferroada” (Morsure), avec Bruno Mello Castanho, un court documentaire sur l’écrivain/fossoyeur brésilien Tico à São Paulo, au Brésil.En 2018, elle a co-réalisé “La Flaca” (La Maigrichonne), un court-métrage sur une femme transgenre mexicaine et leader du mouvement religieux Santa Muerte dans le quartier Queens à New York. Le film a été acclamé et a été présenté dans plus de 120 festivals de cinéma dans le monde entier tel que Frameline, Outfest, Festival international du film de Fribourg, Festival international du film de Guanajuato, Kasseler Dokfest, Message to Man, Encounters FF.Toujours en 2018, elle réalise avec Bruno Mello Castanho le long métrage documentaire brésilien “Madrigal for a Living Poet”, récompensé par le prix du meilleur film, du meilleur réalisateur, du meilleur scénario, du meilleur montage et du meilleur personnage au Festival de Cinema de Triunfo (Brésil, 2019).En 2020, elle réalise avec Fernanda Pessoa le court métrage “Same/Different/Both/Neither”, une correspondance vidéo entre les cinéastes vivant à Los Angeles (États-Unis) et São Paulo (Brésil). Le film a été présenté en première dans la compétition de courts métrages de l’IDFA, Festival international du film documentaire d’Amsterdam, et a été sélectionné dans des festivals de cinéma comme le Festival Biarritz Amérique Latine, DOC NYC, RIDM, Leeds Film Festival et Vienna Shorts.Elle réalise actuellement avec Fernanda Pessoa le long métrage documentaire “Swing and Sway”, qui a été sélectionné au Arts Talent Market au Sheffield Doc Fest ainsi qu’au lab Arché (qui fait partie du Doc Lisboa Film Festival Industry hub) et qui a reçu le fonds suisse “Visions Sud Est” dédié à la postproduction de documentaires.Chica produit également le long métrage documentaire “”Esu and the Universe” réalisé par Thiago Zanato : une production entre le Brésil et le Nigeria finaliste du Roy Dean Spring Grant, récipiendaire de la bourse Points North et qui a été sélectionnée au Latino Media Market – NALIP Media Summit, WIP latino au FICG à LA, “Only in New York” – DOCNYC et DOCSP – et au International Documentary of São Paulo, Brazil.

Le travail de Fernanda Pessoa, cinéaste et artiste visuelle brésilienne, se situe dans le domaine du cinéma documentaire et expérimental. Pessoa réalise également des installations vidéo. Doctorante à l’Université de São Paulo (ECA/USP), ses recherches se concentrent sur le cinéma expérimental réalisé par des femmes en Amérique latine. Elle est titulaire d’un MFA en études cinématographiques de la Sorbonne Nouvelle réalisé sous la direction de Philippe Dubois.En 2017, Pessoa sort son premier long métrage documentaire “Stories our cinema did (not) tell”, présenté et primé dans plusieurs festivals internationaux. Son deuxième long documentaire “Arid Zone” a reçu une mention honorable à Dok Leipzig. Elle a fait partie des Talents de la Berlinale en 2019. Son travail a été projeté dans des festivals comme IDFA, RIDM, DOC NYC, DocLisboa, Brasilia Film Festival, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Cinélatino Toulouse et dans des institutions comme BIENALSUR, REDCAT/CalArts, IMS (Institut Moreira Salles), São Paulo’s Museum of Sound and Image, Paço das artes, entre autres.

Chica Barbosa is a Mexican-Brazilian filmmaker based in Los Angeles, US. Her work focuses on non-fiction cinema, experimental and hybrid narratives, addressing themes like immigration, colonization, displacement, LGBTQ+ rights, identity and faith as an act of resistance. She recently moved from São Paulo, Brazil, where she was part of the Film Collective “Cinefusão” and where she started her own production company “”En Caliente Films”, since 2014. She directed “Ferroada” (Bite), along with Bruno Mello Castanho, a short documentary about the Brazilian writer/undertaker Tico in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2018, she co-directed “La Flaca” (The Bony Lady), a short film about a Mexican transgender woman and leader of the Santa Muerte religious movement in Queens, NY; the film was highly acclaimed and entered over 120 film festivals around the world (among them: Frameline, Outfest, Fribourg International Film Festival, Guanajuato International Film Festival, Kasseler Dokfest, Message to Man, Encounters FF). Also in 2018, she directed along with Bruno Mello Castanho, the brazilian feature documentary “Madrigal for a Living Poet” – awarded with best film, best director, best script, best edit and best character at the Festival de Cinema de Triunfo (Brazil, 2019).
In 2020, she directed, along with Fernanda Pessoa, the short film “Same/Different/Both/Neither”, a video correspondence between the filmmakers living in Los Angeles (USA) and São Paulo (Brazil) – the film premiered in the Short Competition of IDFA – International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and was selected to film festivals like Festival Biarritz Amérique Latine, DOC NYC, RIDM, Leeds Film Festival and Vienna Shorts. In 2021, the film was also was shortlisted in the IDA Awards for Short Films.
She is currently directing along with Fernanda Pessoa the feature documentary “Swing and Sway”, which has been selected to the Arts Talent Market at the Sheffield Doc Fest, to the Arché Lab (part of the Doc Lisboa Film Festival Industry hub) and was granted the Swiss fund ‘Visions Sud Est’ for Documentaries in postproduction. Fernanda Pessoa is a Brazilian filmmaker and visual artist, working primarily on documentary, experimental cinema and videoinstallations. PhD candidate at University of São Paulo (ECA/USP) researching women’s experimental cinema made in Latin America, she holds a MFA in Film Studies at the Sorbonne Nouvelle, under Philippe Dubois’ direction.
In 2017, Pessoa released her first feature documentary “”Stories our cinema did (not) tell”, screened and awarded in several international festivals. Fernanda est à São Paulo. Chica a emménagé à Los Angeles. Alors qu’elles traversent la première année de la pandémie de COVID-19 et suivent le chaos politique et les bouleversements sociaux de leur pays, les réalisatrices échangent par vidéos-lettres. Dans le rigoureux scénario qu’elles élaborent pour leur correspondance, un défi s’impose : chaque lettre doit être inspirée par la démarche d’une cinéaste de cinéma expérimental. L’immersion dans le travail d’autres femmes, combinée à un échange intime entre amies, fait émerger un appel à réoccuper les rues et la vie collective. Dans ces dialogues et rencontres à distance, Fernanda et Chica construisent des ponts entre le Nord et le Sud, entre le passé et le présent, entre les mondes où l’on vit et ceux auxquels on rêve encore.
Fernanda is in São Paulo. Chica has moved to Los Angeles. As they navigate the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic and follow the political chaos and social upheavals in their countries, the directors communicate via video-letter. In the rigorous setting they develop for their correspondence, a challenge is set: each letter must be inspired by the work of a female experimental filmmaker. Intimate conversations between friends and their immersion in other women’s work become a call to reoccupy the streets and collective life. Through their discussions and remote meetings, Fernanda and Chica build bridges between the North and South, between the past and present, between the worlds we live in and those we dream of.
