Artiste et réalisatrice, Filipa César s’intéresse aux dimensions fictionnelles du documentaire. Sa pratique s’empare des médias comme des moyens d’étendre et d’exposer des contre-récits de résistance à l’historicisme. Depuis 2011, elle explore notamment les origines du cinéma du Mouvement de libération africain en Guinée-Bissau comme laboratoire d’une opposition aux épistémologies dominantes. En 2017, “Spell Reel”, son premier long métrage, est présenté en première mondiale dans la section Forum de la 67e Berlinale. – [Tënk.fr]
Filipa César is an artist and filmmaker interested in the fictional aspects of the documentary, the porous borders between cinema and its reception, and the politics and poetics inherent to the moving image and imaging technologies. Since 2011, she has been researching the origins of the cinema of the African Liberation Movement in Guinea Bissau as a laboratory of resistance to ruling epistemologies. The resulting body of work comprises 16mm films, digital archives, videos, seminars, screenings, publications, ongoing collaborations with artists, theorists, and activists, and is the basis for her Phd thesis at FCSH-New University of Lisbon. César’s genre-bending film and video work bridges contemporary and historical discourses, also apparent in her writings, such as her essay Meteorizations, published in the Third Text special issue: The Wretched Earth: Botanical Conflicts and Artistic Interventions, edited by Shela Sheik and Ros Gray. – [vdb.org]

En 2011, une archive filmique et du matériel audio ré-émergent à Bissau. Filipa César imagine un périple où cette fragile matière du passé opère comme le prisme visionnaire d’un éclat d’obus à travers lequel nous regardons. Numérisée à Berlin et projetée dans différents contextes – dans ce qui pourrait ressembler à un cinéma itinérant transnational – l’archive provoque débats, récits et prémonitions. Des villages les plus isolés de Guinée-Bissau aux capitales européennes, ces archives silencieuses deviennent un lieu à partir duquel chercher un antidote à la crise mondiale. “Spell Reel” a été présenté à Doclisboa 2017, en compétition nationale, où il a reçu une Mention Spéciale du jury de la compétition internationale et le prix José Saramago. – [Tënk]
An archive of film and audio material in Bissau. On the verge of complete ruin, the footage testifies to the birth of Guinean cinema as part of the decolonising vision of Amílcar Cabral, the liberation leader who was assassinated in 1973. In collaboration with the Guinean filmmakers Sana na N’Hada and Flora Gomes, as well as many allies, Filipa César imagines a journey wherein this fragile matter from the past operates as a visionary prism of shrapnel, with which to look through. Digitised in Berlin and screened at various locations – in what would come to resemble a transnational itinerant cinema – the archive convokes debates, storytelling and forecasts. From their screening in isolated villages in Guinea-Bissau to European capitals, the silent reels are now a place from which people may search for antidotes to a world in crisis.

A partir du récit de Filipa sur les archives du cinéma militant en Guinée-Bissau, sujet primaire de Spell Reel, l’atelier vise à poursuivre les débats sur la signification des projets historiques de décolonisation pour imaginer des alternatives à cette obscure réalité. Cet atelier aura lieu au GEM Lab.
Starting with Filipa’s account of the archives of militant cinema in Guinea-Bissau, the workshop aims to continue the debates, embodied in Spell Reel itself, about the significance of historical decolonial projects for imagining alternatives to the world in crisis. This workshop will take place at the GEM Lab.
